Norfolk State University
Wins the 2024 MEAC Women's
Basketball Championships
Abigail Weiss
Norfolk, VA-- Norfolk
State is crowned the 2023-24
Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference Women's
Basketball Champions.
After several lead exchanges
in the fourth quarter, the
Spartans pulled away in the
final seconds for a final
score of 51-46.
Kierra Wheeler scored
a game-high 20 points and
grabbed 15 rebounds while Diamond
Johnson scored all 12 of
her points in the second
half to lead Norfolk State
University to a 51-46 win
over Howard University in
the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference tournament
championship for the second
season in a row. As a
result, the Spartans advance
to the NCAA Tournament for
the second straight season
with an automatic bid.
Pairings will be announced
on Sunday.
“Last year when we went,
there is a special feeling
that you get when you see
that NCAA March Madness
banner as you approach the
arena,” explains Vickers. “I
think we were happy to be
there last year. But we now
feel that if we rebound the
basketball, play defense
make some of those shots, we
can play with anybody.”
Norfolk State jumped out early
but kept within a single digit
margin with the Bison throughout
the game. Each team traded
leads, parlaying some tough
defense and strong rebounding to
make it a close contest.
The Spartans got the edge 11-6
at the end of the first quarter
before Howard countered with a
12-9 run to cut the deficit to
20-18 at intermission.
“They play a matchup zone like
no one we have played,”
acknowledged NSU head coach
Larry Vickers of his opponent.
“You could see its impact where
we were tentative at times and
it resulted in missed layups.”
Howard continued to stymie the
Spartans and put together an
18-13 run in the third quarter
to take a 36-33 lead going into
the final stanza.
That is when Wheeler and Johnson
took over. Wheeler connected on
9 of 21 from the floor, scored
her team’s first nine points.
But the Bison refused to let up
as Kaiya Creek nailed
back-to back three pointers to
tie the game at 44 all. The lead
exchanged hands and Howard took
a 47-46 lead on a Vanessa
Blake putback with 1:28
remaining.
Johnson connected on one of two
free throws and from there the
Spartans defense and some deft
free throw shooting by Da’Brya
Clark, who knocked down three of
four free throws to close out
the scoring and secure the win.
“We pride ourselves on our
defense and were able to make
stops down the stretch,” noted
Vickers, the MEAC Coach of the
Year and Tournament Outstanding
Coach.
This years championship game
marked the fourth time that the
two have met in the tournament
finals, snd is a carbon copy of
last year's championship
match-up.
“I am disappointed for our
players,” lamented Howard head
coach Ty Grace, in the post-game
press conference. “We played
hard and did the things that we
planned to do. We just came up a
little short. Norfolk State is a
good basketball team. I am proud
of this team.”
Graduate guard Iyanna Warren led
the Bison with a team-high 19
points while Creek added eight
points and six rebounds.
The following is the
All-Tournament team:
Kierra Wheeler, Norfolk State
Iyanna Warren, Howard
University
Laila Lawrence, Coppin State
Kaiya Creek, Howard University
Diamond Johnson was named Most
Outstanding Performer in the
tournament, while her head coach
Larry Vickers earned Tournament
Most Outstanding Performer.

Norfolk State Takes on No. 2
Stanford in Round One of the
NCAA Tournament
Abigail Weis
Norfolk, VA.--Norfolk State
women’s basketball punched their
ticket to the NCAA Tournament
winning their second consecutive
MEAC Basketball Championship
last weekend. The Spartans will
enter the NCAA Tournament as the
No. 15 seed in the Portland Four
division hosted at Stanford. The
Spartans will take on the
Cardinal of No. 2 Stanford on
Friday, March 22nd for a 10:00pm
EST. tip-off
Norfolk State heads into the
NCAA Tournament on a 15-game win
streak, as they finished their
season with an overall record of
27-5 (13-1 conf.) to set a
school record with a 92.9
winning percentage. After
breezing through the first two
rounds of the MEAC Tournament
with a 30.5 margin average, they
faced the Howard Bison in the
MEAC Championship, where they
were crowned back-to-back
Champions after a narrow 51-46
victory. Diamond Johnson was
awarded All-Tournament
Outstanding player while setting
a MEAC Tournament single game
scoring record with 30 points in
the semi-final round against

Head Coach Dawn Staley stated
“Just so that we can make note
for next season, Norfolk State
is not a 16 seed…They do not
play like a 16 seed team, they
are well coached and a
tremendous team and opponent. We
didn’t shoot the ball well in
the first half and I credit that
to how well Norfolk State
played.”
Inside the Numbers:
Norfolk State ranks nationally
across the boards from a
defensive end. The Spartans are
fourth in the nation in both

Why is the School of
Nanoscience and Nanoengineering Joint
with HBCU NCA&T and cross town HWI UNC
Greensboro and located at Gateway
Research Park alleged former NC A&T farm
property. |
|
"A
Promise for the Future By some accounts,
nanotechnology is destined to replace
much of today's technology. Gateway
University Research Park expects to be
at the forefront of these new
technologies with the creation of a new
institution the
Joint School for Nanoscience and
Nanoengineering (JSNN)" [15]
“The Joint School for
Nanoscience and Nanoengineering….. built
on the major nanotechnology research
activity been established...at NCA&T”13.
"JSNN to offer (a) joint
interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree and (a)
joint professional science master's
degree."
"The Joint School of Nanoscience and
Nanoengineering will be a unique,
interdisciplinary school, located at the
South Campus of the Gateway University
Research Park, the joint millennial
campus of NC A&T and UNCG' (
formerly NC A&T farm property).
The
intent of the (JSNN) school is to become
a world-class educational and technical institution.
[34]
“It [JSNN] will be one of the most
stimulating opportunities in the history
of the area and will serve as a national
model for collaboration between two
institutions, one a historical black
institution and the other a historical
white female institution.” [5] |

North

not changed their
spots. In
1970, the United States
Department of Health,

notified the University
of North Carolina System
that it was violating
Title VI of the Civil
Rights Act of 1964 by
maintaining a racially
dual system of public
higher education. |

|
" I
am so energized by the potential of this research
park, in particular the joint schools of
nano technology and nano science. The world is
seeing explosive growth today in the
commercialization of nanotechnology. We will
have all of the assets right here in Guilford
County that we need to participate in that
explosion, and they will be right here at the Gateway
University Research Park." said ("Greensboro
Boy" ) Erskine Bowles President of the
University of North Carolina System. [2] |
|
|
The JSNN will train students
to conduct basic and applied research in
Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. It will offer a
joint interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree and a
joint professional science master's degree (M.S).
|
|
|
|
|
“Activities/Resources: Leverage faculty collaboration at
JSNN to enhance research partnerships between UNCG and
NC A&T researchers. Expected Result, UNCG opportunities
in grants previously unavailable due to limitations in
areas of certain research expertise. “ |
|
When all of the
occupations which will be affected
by nanotechnology will require a BS
in engineering with a broad,
interdisciplinary and
multi-disciplinary approach; will
require an understanding not only of
electrical, mechanical and civil
engineering, but biology, physics
and chemistry as well. |

Why is
across-town Liberal Art UNC
Greensboro with programs in music
and nursing, requiring relevant
courses be taken at the School of
Engineering at North Carolina A&T
University and will be able to work
on collaborative projects with
faculty in the School of
Engineering”, except
for unvarnished racism offering
Nanotechnology degrees?
